Jelly Baby wave

Sam Steventon, a STEM Ambassador, visited our club and showed the students the jelly baby wave. This activity uses two lengths of duct tape with skewers stuck between and jelly babies attached to either side of the skewers. When flicked at one end a transverse wave travels along the length.
In The Zone - The Human body
15th November 2012
We used In The Zone kit for this session where the pupils found out their pulse rate, blood/oxygen level, peak flow and their tidal volume. We used ‘Gangnam Style’ dance as the exercise to see what happens to our heart rate after exercise….
Things that float!
13th November 2012
Last night we hosted a fun evening of things that float including hovercrafts with balloons and CDs, Cartesian divers, ping pong balls and hairdryers, lava lamps and origami boats. We finished off the evening with a ‘best paper aeroplane’ competition! A bit messy but lots of fun for everyone.
Fireworks Extravaganza

At last night’s STEM Club we had an excellent turn out of Year 6 pupils, Year 7s, 8s and 9s. Pupils had the opportunity to write their names using fire writing, burning magnesium, flame testing. The big finales of the evening were sparklers, glow sticks, the Howling jelly baby and a small selection of fireworks to celebrate bonfire night.

Pupils carried out the flame tests to see which compounds give which colour. We also bought indoor fireworks for demonstration….
Things that go bang!
30th October 2012
We kicked off our first STEM Club session with all things that go bang. This included methane bubbles, a whoosh bottle and all students had to make some squeaky pops and mini hydrogen balloons. We also had a large hydrogen balloon. This session invited Year 6 pupils from out local feeder primary schools and also a number of our newly recruited Year 8 and 9 STEM Leaders and STEM Prefect.

This is a project that will span over 6 sessions. We have obtained parts of a kit from Mindsteps and the first milestone is to communicate with the Faraduino board.
Halloween

All experiments were Halloween Themed. They were introduced to the session with spooky glowing drinks(Lemonade with tonic ice cubes)
Pupils made; – scary ghost sounds out of a paper cup, string and a wet tissue – a floating ghost using tissue paper and a balloon
We also showed them dry ice and how that works. Some pupils got the chance to add dry icec to water and produce a spooky atmosphere….
Go4Set Challenge

This challenge was launched to our team of 6 pupils at George Spencer with a representative from the EDT and our company mentor Stephen Pell from Interfleet

STEM Club Year 8

15 members of Year 8 are investigating the Bob sleigh and the Technology, Science and Science involved in the design.
Year 10 STEM club

Our Year 10 team are working with an Architect from Wrexham to deign a new bridge to go over the Mersey.
Year 9 STEM Club
14th September 2012
Year9 are looking at parachute design getting ready to launch a poor Plasticine ‘victim’ off the Tower Block at school. Last to the bottom wins!
