Exploding Chemistry

Exploding Chemistry

Club members started the session by exploding their own bottle rockets. Each member made a hole of their chosen size into the bottle’s lid. They then poured a small amount of ethanol into the bottle. The lid was then screwed on and the exhaust fumes lit! The winning rocket was built by Jamie Pybus and went over 10m off the launch ramp. Students then watched a number of cool demonstrations conducted by Mr. Tuck. These were the whoosh bottle, burning a five pound note, the reaction between magnesium and potassium nitrate using a wire coil for ignition, the fountain experiment, ammonium dichromate volcano and finally, the old favourite of methane bubbles…great fun!!!!
