RTP (Round the Pole Flying)

The club involves girls and boys who are at risk of underachieving and require additional motivation. The link with Technology and science will be evident focusing on the principles of flight such as drag, propulsion, the mechanics of force, etc. Maths principles drawn upon include symmetry, scale, costing and measurement. The will also gain experience of working with electronics looking at circuits and the use of electricity as a power supply.

Students will experience engineering techniques first hand as they use both hand tools and machines to create their planes designs. There will be strong links to history as the basic theories of flight will be introduced asking students to research past planes and flying methods. Parts of the planes will be produced by hand cutting the main shape using either hand tools fret saws and hot wire cutters other sections such as the wings and tail sections will be produced using the CNC card cutter design on 2D Design Tools planes can then be Graphically enhanced using an airbrush (with non solvent paint) in a ducted extractor area to comply to health and safety regulations. Funding will allow the club to develop in the 2nd stage. Once the main production systems and equipment have been purchased the club aims to become sustainable from sponsorship and student based subs to cover yearly materials costs.
