Working in collaboration with Pete Adamson, the Head of Science, at Mangotsfield School (another ASSEC school in the area), funding was obtained from the Government's Work Related Learning scheme to allow a joint project to be undertaken between our two schools. The project we developed involved filming exciting, unique or interesting Science Demonstrations, downloading them for editing and then publishing them on a web site thus making them available as teaching resources. The joint funding paid for a film company called Suited and Booted and one of their staff members to work on the project with pupils, and provide the expertise needed to film, edit and publish commercial looking videos.
Our ASSEC funding allowed us to purchase hardware (laptops and cameras) for the venture as well as support transportation costs but some of the funding for hardware also came from internal school funds that we bid for separately (namely ICT and our Performing Arts specialist status).
On the first day of this project twelve Hanham pupils travelled to Mangotsfield with ASSEC project leaders and helpers for the whole day and had a fantastic time doing experiments whilst trying to capture them on tape! Chris (from Suited and Booted) did a marvellous job teaching the pupils all about storyboarding, shot types, camera work, directing the cast, and many other skills.
You can see pupils shooting footage in one of the labs used for the day in one of the pictures. Pupils also learned how to import and edit their videos ready for publishing. You can also see Hanham pupils (with Mangotsfield pupils in the background) working on an edit of one of their videos.
As well as learning all the skills required for creating a movie, pupils had to effectively collaborate with students from another school, work for a day in unfamiliar laboratories and surroundings, share roles and ideas within their teams and aim towards producing at least four completed videos sharing the results of at least one of these with the rest of the group at the end of the day. All pupils worked fantastically well and were a real credit to Hanham High School.
Some of these video materials have now been uploaded and can be seen at the following address:
