NORTH EAST BIG BANG FAIR CREST AWARDS 2010 Investigating how the amount of fuel effects how far a model rocket travels.

22nd July 2010

In the Science Master Class, our group tested how the different amounts of fuel (or in our case water) effected how far a water rocket would travel. It was based on the idea that, although more water would give it more power, the weight would limit how far the rocket could travel. This problem is a problem in real life with the NASA rockets that are limited in fuel because of the extra weight. We used a hand pump, water and a coke bottle to test how far they would travel along a flat surface (so we didn’t have to estimate the height). We really enjoyed this experiment and we were all looking forward to it every week! The results we found were very interesting as well!

BIG BANG FAIR 2010 BEST BRONZE CREST AWARD WINNER : Which tattoos last longest?

22nd July 2010

In our science master class, our group tested how durable and how waterproof different types of tattoos were. The different types of tattoos that we tested were; Low quality semi-permanent; Biro and Henna. We tested the durability by wearing one of each tattoo for a week and recording which one wore away first, this test was quite successful. To test how waterproof the tattoos were we rubbed them with soapy water for 1 minute and recorded how much they had faded. In these experiments we found that the most durable and waterproof tattoo was the Henna tattoo, this is also what we had predicted from the start so we are quite confident that the tests we carried out were fair.

Jenny: “It was good fun making our own tattoo designs. We could be creative.”
