The STEM Challenges are ten activities that have been inspired by London 2012.
Each one is a competition and will focus on a different aspect of the preparations or the event itself.
They provide a contextual and cross-curricular approach to studying the STEM subjects at 11-14 (KS3/S1-S3).
The STEM Challenges are being managed by STEMNET (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) in association with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
Each challenge runs for 6-8 weeks and teams are set tasks via the STEM Challenges website. There is a mixture of hands-on testing, experimental work and research, all backed up with online resources.
A team's entry is judged by STEM Ambassadors at a regional judging event. Shortlisted teams are invited to the national final of each challenge to be in with a chance of winning some very special prizes.
Make sure you register to stay fully informed.
Each of the STEM challenges was originally launched as a competition for school pupils. However, we are really keen that the resources from previous STEM Challenges are used by schools and other organisations after the competition element has passed.
The Challenge briefs, factsheets and activities can be used in many ways to support Club activities, or to supoprt extra-curricular activity days. You may wish to run the whole Challenge again in school as a one-day activity, or you can choose to focus in on a single aspect of the material which supports a specific part of the curriculum - the choice is yours!
Each STEM Challenge is launched as a competition. During the competition phase, entries will be judged and there are some big prizes available for each one. Make sure you are familiar with the conditions of entry before entering a team.
Once the competition element has passed, we would still encourage schools to use the Challenges as a club or classroom resource for pupils - they are all curriculum linked!
